I can recommend Tendenci Membership Management Software (
http://www.tendenci.com ).
As webmaster for MCA-I.ORG, member of Houston Ad Federation (haf.org),
member of OnlyInHouston.org, all who use the software, I have tons of hours
building and using.
What I like most about it is that Tendenci management/developers have very
high standards for usability, W3 compliance, search engine optimization, and
the database modules are integrated for RSS.
For content creation by the membership at large, it seems to have no end to
functionality... and continues to evolve. They understand "community" and
"conversation".
Their pricing is scaled to membership volume.
Specifically to your question, William, the online software has a
"fine-grained" permissions system.
Drill down deep...

Hi William,
To answer your question generally - except in the very simple cases (where
you manage a list of members and passwords manually), you do need an online
application to support members/subscriptions. These applications consist of
some sort of database and a coding layer (PHP, Java, etc). Technically, the
application runs on your web server environment and provides the appropriate
(X)HTML based on the user's role (member or non-member, for instance).
There are a number of applications (both open source/free and commercial)
that handle membership, and the array of possibilities can be a bit
confusing when shopping around for a solution.
You might want to first try outlining exactly what functionality you need.
For instance, are you building an online community with discussion boards
and chat, do you need members to pay their subscriptions fees online, or do
you simply need to restrict certain pages to those who have paid?
The applications that handle this type of functionality often fall within
the label of "Content Management System" - that's a very loose term that
encompasses everything from blogs to full blown systems that sites like
Amazon use.
Hope that helps,

Subject: [Accessibility_sig] subscription/membership based web pages
Does anyone know how to set up web pages that are restricted to people who
are either members of an organization or people who have paid a subscription
fee? I have seen many web pages that are restricted to people who re
registered members. I have also seen several websites that are restricted to
people who have paid a subscription fee, so I want to learn something about
this facet of the internet.
Is this something that can be done through html/xhtml? Does a
membership/subscription feature require the integration of a database with
the internet, and if so, does it require the use of php, xml or some other
form of coding?
I realize that this question probably cannot be fully addressed in an e-mail
message, so I would appreciate any information resource (books, web pages,
etc.) you can direct me to about this.
